Salt Island gets its name from its salt ponds, which were once an important resource. At one time, this tiny uninhabited island was home to a small community of hard-working individuals who harvested salt. After collecting the salt the residents would sell the important commodity to other islands as well as the British Navy. Today, Salt Island is a lovely stop on your BVI yacht charter.
RMS Rhone Dive Site
Weather
Warm to hot and sunny most of the year. However, there is a “dry” season, which in the past was the time when locals would harvest salt. There isn’t much shade so be certain to use plenty of sunscreen.
Places to See
For divers, the RMS Rhone wreck, which is considered one of the best scuba diving sites in the Caribbean.
Salt ponds. The ponds which once produced salt are still present on the island.
Hike around the island, check out the salt ponds, the cemetery, and the wall commemorating the sailors who perished with RMS Rhone.
Contemplate the history of Salt Island. At one time there were 100 residents including Clementine Helena Leonard Smith, who passed away in 1998, and Norwell Durant, who passed away in 2004. Ms. Smith maintained the beaches and salt ponds and Mr. Durant greeted tourists and taught them about the salt gathering history.

Marinas and Anchorages
Anchoring is not permitted since the Rhone is a national marine park. If the available moorings are all taken you can anchor at the Settlement or Lee Bay and take the dingy over to the dive site. There is a dingy mooring.
