BVISAIL
“You Make the Memories, We’ll Make the Arrangements”

Explore the BVI with an Anegada Yacht Charter. Anegada is a flat coral and limestone island no more than 15 feet above sea level. Moreover, it is in stark contrast to its mountainous sister islands in the British Virgin Islands.

It is the second largest island in the BVI, approximately eleven miles long by two and a half miles wide. And, after all, almost flat. It is the second largest island of the British Virgin Islands and sits just north of Virgin Gorda.

The island gets its name from the Spanish meaning ‘flooded” because Anegada is not a volcanic island but a large coral reef ecosystem. Hence the island’s nickname, The “drowned island.” It is just north of Virgin Gorda and is usually visited after a night in North Sound.

Weather

When visiting the British Virgin Islands, remember that hurricane season runs from June through November. In the winter, you will experience sunny skies, pleasant breezes, and very little rain. Temperatures will be from the low 70s to the low 80s.

But it is also the most popular season to visit the BVI. Spring is a beautiful time of the year to visit Anegada. The weather will be fantastic, for the most part, and accommodations will be more abundant.

Places to See on Anegada

  • Cow Wreck Beach – Located on the north shore of Anegada, Cow Wreck Beach is a beautiful spot to relax, swim and snorkel. The beach was named for the cow bones that washed up on the beach after ships carrying these animals to the islands wrecked on its reefs. Then after soaking in the sun, stop by the Cow Wreck Beach Bar for lunch, dinner, or a beverage.
  • Loblolly Bay Beach – Loblolly Beach is a gorgeous stretch of white sand beach on the north shore of Anegada. This is arguably the best beach on the island for snorkeling. Swim over the reefs to explore the colorful angelfish, parrotfish, and natural coral. There are a few small caves as well as a wreck to view.
  • Big Bamboo Restaurant – If you want to take a break from the sun and surf to enjoy a delicious meal. This is also an excellent spot for beachcombing. Walk the long beach to collect beautiful shells and view the island’s flora and fauna.
  • Jack Bay Beach – Jack Bay Beach is yet another excellent spot to swim, snorkel, and relax on a beautiful beach during your Anegada Luxury Yacht Charter. This is a peaceful and relaxing spot located just west of Loblolly Beach.

Things To Do | Anegada Yacht Charter

Adventurous

  • Snorkeling – find abundant parrotfish and other colorful marine life along Horseshoe Reef. The island’s northern end offers magnificent reefs and clear blue water for fabulous snorkeling.
  • Scuba Diving – The waters here are famous for wreck diving. Anegada is “guarded” by the famous Horseshoe Reef to its southeast. Due to it being eighteen miles long, it is one of the world’s most extensive coral reefs and the longest in the Caribbean. Horseshoe Reef has claimed more than 300 shipwrecks, making it well known for wreck diving.
  • Kite Surfing – Let us introduce you to kite surfing! There’s a kite surfing school on-site at Anegada Beach Club, where we stayed for two nights, and I loved watching the kitesurfers fly across the water on their boards. Anegada is widely considered the best destination in the BVI for kitesurfing, with world-class conditions that make it possible regularly.
  • Kite Surfing “For newbies” – lessons run from November through August with Tommy Gaunt Kitesurfing. If kitesurfing isn’t your thing, they also offer snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding on the beach in front of the resort.
  • Deep-Sea Fishing – This is an ideal spot for game fish such as bonefish, tarpon, snook, jacks, and barracuda.
  • Hiking – Find wild orchids, feathery sea lavender, and frangipani. On Bones Bight nature trail, you might find the endangered and the rare rock iguana.

More casual Experiences on Anegada British Virgin Islands

  • Dine on Lobster – If you’re a lobster lover, you don’t want to miss out on Anegada’s famous lobster! Considered the lobster capital of the Caribbean and the home of the annual Lobster Festival in November, these locally sourced delicacies are a must-try for every visitor.
  • If you are wondering where to try it? You’ll be hard-pressed to find a menu that doesn’t have lobster (in fact, I doubt it exists). Enjoy it at lunch or dinner, in a salad, in a wrap, grilled, blackened, or Thermidor-style.
  • Bird Watching – Nutmeg Point is a treasured area for bird lovers
  • Beach walking – Beach lovers will find long beautiful deserted white sand beaches
  • Watch Flamingos – The island’s large salt ponds are home to hundreds of roseate flamingos. You can observe these rosy-colored birds that roam free here from the observation deck at Flamingo Pond.
  • Dining – Anegada is famous for its fresh fish and delicious lobster. Some favorite restaurants to visit include Anegada Beach Club Restaurant. Fine dining for lunch and dinner. And, of course, they offer fantastic lobster dishes.
  • Wonky Dog -A popular destination for boaters since they have a dinghy dock. It is located on the water’s edge at Benders Point. Very laid-back dining with seafood dishes and drinks on their roof-top bar and dining area.
  • The Lobster Trap – You cannot get lobster any fresher than at the Lobster Trap, fresh from the trap! Pull up to the restaurant’s dinghy dock and enjoy waterfront dining. Lunch is available without a reservation, but like most restaurants in Anegada, dinner reservations are highly recommended. Cow Wreck Beach Bar.
  • Sit on the beach – in one of their colorful Adirondack chairs and savor their excellent conch fritters. Order a “Cowkiller,” their creative take on the famous BVI “painkiller.” Made famous by Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke.

Marinas and Anchorages | Anegada British Virgin Islands

Anegada does not have any marinas. You will find designated anchorage sites and moorings at Tortola and Virgin Gorda. They both have active yacht clubs and facilities to accommodate all types of sailing and motor yachts.

These marinas offer water and fuel stations. Since Anegada is only about 18 miles northwest of Virgin Gorda, it is a leisurely sail on a good day. If the weather permits then you must visit Anegada during your BVI Sailing Itinerary.
