Underwater experience - BVI Scuba Diving Insights

Variety is the spice of a crewed charter boat vacation. From ever-changing itineraries to gourmet menus, the British Virgin Islands offer something for everyone. Add endless on-the-water adventures, and you’ve got a true playground of possibilities. And Scuba Diving Insights in the BVI adds to the variety.

As former charter yacht crew, my husband and I had the privilege of customizing trips for countless groups. One of our most-loved activities to share with guests was scuba diving. As a certified Dive Instructor and Dive Master, we had the privilege of guiding many guests underwater. We introduced both new and experienced divers to the best dive sites in the BVI.

To get the most out of your dive experience, your BVISAIL’s Yacht Charter Broker can match you with the perfect yacht and crew. We recommend boats where the crew is passionate about diving and love introducing guests to the underwater world. A few of our favorites include:

Why Dive in the British Virgin Islands?

Scuba diving in the BVI offers easy access to some of the Caribbean’s top dive sites. Calm, warm waters with visibility often exceeding 80 feet create ideal diving conditions. Whether you’re just starting or logging your hundredth dive, the BVI is perfect for you.

With many dive sites near anchorages or moorings, we could often lead dives right from the stern of our yacht. It doesn’t get easier, or more beautiful than that.

BVI Scuba Diving Insights for Beginners & Pros

Maybe you are new to diving?  Or need a refresher course? Many charter boats, including ours, have a certified Dive Instructor onboard. If you’re interested in getting certified, here’s how it works:

  • Before Your Trip: Complete your confined water training and e-learning with your local dive shop.
  • On Charter: Finish your scuba certification while on charter in the warm Caribbean Sea from the back of the boat.

Not ready to commit to full certification? Try a Discover Scuba Diving (Resort) course! This beginner experience lets you try diving in shallow waters, up to 40 feet, under direct supervision. It’s a great way to test the waters and see if diving is right for you.

BVI Scuba Diving Insights: Top Dive Sites

Our insider knowledge as crew helped us plan dives away from the crowds and time our visits to the best spots. Some of the top BVI dive sites include:

  • RMS Rhone (near Salt Island) – the Caribbean’s most famous shipwreck
  • Wreck Alley (off Cooper Island) – an exciting cluster of sunken vessels
  • The Indians (south of Norman Island) – towering rock formations teeming with sea life
  • The Chimney at The Dogs (close to Virgin Gorda) – known for swim-throughs and coral gardens

Something for Everyone Onboard

Charter groups often include a mix of divers, snorkelers, and those who just want to relax. On a crewed yacht charter, BVISAIL can tailor every itinerary and daily activity to fit your group’s preferences.

Want to dive while others paddleboard, snorkel, or sunbathe? Our team will make it happen, both smoothly and stress-free.

Diving Options: From the Yacht or Rendezvous

However, not all charter yachts are dive-capable. For those that aren’t, rendezvous diving is a great alternative. We’ll arrange for a local dive operator to pick you up directly from your yacht and take you to the best sites nearby.
